   Training Workshops

SELA Advisory Group designs and facilitates a range of different training workshops, each tailored to the needs of an organisation.

Workshops are flexible and depending on the desired scope, duration and target group, our trainers can cover as many aspects of the society, economy, history, international norms, and security threats as required, and to various degrees of depth.

SELA Advisory Group consultants have first hand experience of working for NGOs or international organisations in developing countries. We have designed workshops based on our consultants’ own experiences of preparation for entering the field, and the knowledge and tools needed to become equipped for a particular role. With this in mind, our workshops are particularly recommended for personnel who are about to embark on a new project, to move into an unknown country or to start working in the field or in a new organisation.

Workshops offered by SELA Advisory Group include:

International Norms

This workshop explores conflict mapping, cultural-sensitivity issues, human rights and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). These components provide participants with background information on the particular conflict and its current situation; put the participants in real life simulations of cultural/social/religious conflict situations; introduce IHL and human rights in order to ensure participants understand the international framework in which they will operate. The aim of the workshop is to equip participants with the key tools and information to help them implement their mandate whilst working in hostile or multicultural environments.

Mediation

Mediation workshops deliver techniques to equip participants with the skills necessary to mediate between parties of a dispute. These workshops are particularly recommended for personnel that may be deployed or relocated to areas or societies where tensions between opposing communities could still exist.

Workshops cover conflict resolution theories and exercises, mediation and reconciliation skills, inter-cultural dialogue, communication and capacity building. We ensure that participants are equipped with the necessary tools to deal with minor social and political disputes and conflicts.

Conflict Mapping

Conflict Mapping workshops provide an examination of the historical background to the conflict, a presentation of the parties involved and the interests at stake, and a concluding analysis of the current situation.

Conflict Mapping workshops are structured as a seminar and open debate which we believe  allows as many questions and issues as possible to be raised and clarified. The aim of the workshop is to ensure that participants feel more confident and have an increased awareness of the social and political history of their future or current place(s) of assignment(s). By understanding the current social tensions and parameters still present in the particular area or community, participants are able to work more effectively and sensitively with the local population.

Women's Empowerment

Women have a crucial role to play in peace making, peace building and development, yet in many communities it is uncommon for women to participate in political and business development which often goes beyond their social, traditional and customary roles.

SELA Advisory Group supports the international community’s efforts to empower women. Within this framework the objective of the Women’s Empowerment workshop is to strengthen women and equip them to become agents of change and peace in their communities. Workshops use innovative ways to teach leadership skills, to ensure a greater understanding of human and women’s rights and to deliver conflict resolution mechanisms, all through a gender perspective.

Youth Empowerment

Youth represents 1.2 billion people from the ages of 15 to 24. This figure constitutes 18 % of the world’s population making young people a significant part of the development process. Young people offer unique skills, ideas and perspectives which must be considered and incorporated into the broader development paradigm.

Young people are a key vehicle for societal transformation and development, yet they rarely have the opportunity to voice their concerns and implement their ideas either due to institutional and societal barriers, or a lack of knowledge available for youth to transform their ideas into realities.

SELA Advisory Group delivers Youth Empowerment workshops through which young people can explore the different ways to build upon their ideas, and the methods and resources available to translate them into effective action on the ground.

Logical Framework Approach

The Logical Framework Approach (LFA) is an instrument for objective-oriented planning of projects. The method may also be used for the analysis, assessment, follow-up and evaluation of projects, depending on the role and needs of users.

The aim of the LFA is to improve the quality of project operations, which is best achieved when the user has a firm understanding of the method and uses it throughout the entire project cycle.

SELA Advisory Group offers LFA workshops that take participants through the various steps of the process in order to identify the problems that need to be solved and the objectives that must be achieved.

Leaderships Development Program

The Leadership Development Program (LDP) is designed to develop the skills of future project directors and team leaders. The main objectives of LDP are to enhance the participants’ performance by improving their leadership and interpersonal skills.

This comprehensive programme delivers essential skills which will enable employees, directors and leaders to become effective and inspirational role models and leaders of their organisations.

Participants are taken through a series of topics, exercises and lectures that deliver key information and know-how. For the experience to be fruitful and learning-oriented, and to ensure that knowledge can be applied in reality, workshops will ensure that each participant puts theory into practice  through business games, case studies and practical examples of personal experiences.

The programme is tailored to take into consideration the specific challenges, whether cultural, religious, or gender based, that participants may face as future leaders.

Cultural Sensitivity

In international development and peace building it is essential for project directors and managers to have a thorough understanding of the customary and cultural differences of the host country. Greater insight and knowledge of these local parameters will enable project directors to design sustainable and holistic projects that are sensitive to the customary and cultural realities of the host community or country.

Organisations working with an informed understanding of local settings are able to communicate, negotiate and build effective and mutually beneficial relationships with local communities.

SELA Advisory Group has designed a series of short and interactive cultural sensitivity workshops which give participants the opportunity to experience real life cultural sensitivity situations. Workshops explore a range of cultural and customary differences as well as essential public life regulations.
